Scott Rickard, the Greens endorsed candidate for Dobell, was active on
Sunday. He was working with local residents and other members of the
Central Coast Greens to remove 12 bags of rubbish, plus assorted larger
items, from the Lisarow Wetlands. Four of the litter bags contained cans
and bottles and were dispatched for recycling.
CEN (The Central Coast Community Environment Network) maintains that the
Lisarow Wetlands have "Ecological Value" and provide valuable habitat
for freshwater fish, reptiles, amphibians, and water birds including a
large flock of Little Black Cormorants. It contains a population of
Melaleuca biconvexa which is a species of special conservation
significance.
The 2006 Gosford City Councils Plan of Management for the Lisarow
Wetlands states "Much of the wetland is in excellent condition with
minor occurrences of weeds and littering along the roadsides" and thus
has significant value and deserves to be conserved.
Scott and the other volunteers were very careful to not indiscriminately
remove all the "rubbish" but were vigilant in case some "local wildlife"
had used the litter for a "home".
